The names incorrectly reported as the pilots on board the Asiana plane that crashed had been floating around the internet at least two days before KTVU, the Fox affiliate in San Francisco, reported them.
Three of the names that were read on KTVU Friday appeared Wednesday under the thread “Asiana” in a chat forum devoted to, of all things, off-road vehicles.
Readers of JKowners.com apparently didn’t have enough off-road vehicle news to talk about, so they distracted themselves with some pretty sick jokes about people dying in air plane crashes.
Within hours after KTVU reported the names, users on JKowners were laughing that they were the source of the names for KTVU.
AsAmNews was tipped off by twitter follower @zefirotorna of the New York City area who describes himself as someone who’s impressed by all the social engineering going on in Twitter.
From Jerry Liu via Facebook: RE: Pilots names came from joke on internet: One of the ways for things like this not to happen is for more Asian Americans to enter the media. We need Asian Americans working at TV stations, movie studios, newspapers and all the other outlets that have vast networks of influence. I work at a TV news station in Philadelphia, and I'm the ONLY Asian American in the whole station. That has got to CHANGE. Encourage your kids to pursue communications!
From Bernard Luna Cariosa via Facebook: RE: Pilots names came from joke on internet: That's the thing. We do need more Asian Americans in the mainstream media, but they are not casting us! The Hollywood white washing! I've seen so many casting specs that ONLY requires Caucasians, African-Americans or Latino. We need to keep fighting to get ourselves in the mainstream, without being type casted
from Jerry Liu via Facebook RE: Pilots names came from joke on internet: your point highlights what I'm saying. Asian Americans need to enter the media on all sides of the equation. More Asian Americans should try to be directors or writers or producers, or news managers. Only when you get Asian Americans behind the scenes MAKING THE DECISIONS will you get rid of white washing and typecasting. It's not easy because media is such a fickle and crazy industry. I've been at my station for eight months, and already 8 people have left and were replaced. The media is not a very safe/stable career path, which is why many risk-averse people choose something else. But if we want change, we need to support our Asian brothers who are taking the risk.
from Cynthia Liu via Facebook RE: Pilots names came from joke on internet: Someone can pay me six figures to do that.
From Alexander Nguyen via Facebook RE: Pilot names came from joke on internet; So, some intern got this off the internet and then called the NTSB where another intern couldn't pass up the chance to troll a news station?
From Dan Wong via Twitter RE:Pilot names came from joke on internet: Unclear if KTVU got names from there
From @HapaMamaGrace via Twitter Re: Pilot names came from joke on interenet: Sounds about right:
from @sgtgoldflea via Twitter: Pilot names came from joke on internet: the media isn't held accountable anymore..

from @caseycapachi via Twitter: Pilot names came from joke on internet: So sad.
