In 1898, Seven ‘Issei’ Japanese Americans were among the 268 men killed in the Spanish American War on the U.S.S. Maine.
The Philippines became involved in the war because it shared a common enemy with the United States, Spain.
As a result, after the war, Filipinos were added to the U.S. population.
