USS MaineIn 1898, Seven ‘Issei’ Japanese Americans were among the 268 men killed in the Spanish American War on the U.S.S. Maine.

The Philippines became involved in the war because it shared a common enemy with the United States, Spain.

As a result, after the war, Filipinos were added to the U.S. population.
