On Thursday, Valerie Chow said she was attacked outside her apartment building in Los Angeles for being Asian American.
“A man started throwing punches at me. He started trying to kick my dog, screaming, ‘Go back to China, you nasty b—-,'” Chow said in a video, adding that she is now terrified about leaving to walk her dog every day.
Chow is a TV executive producer whose work has appeared on networks like Netflix and National Geographic. When the attack occurred, she was actually in the midst of mobilizing her production company for the launch of becool2asians, a grassroots non profit combating anti-Asian COVID-19 hate.
Described on its GoFundMe as “a grassroots collective of veteran media and television entertainment professionals,” becool2asians hopes to provide factual, positive counter-messaging to anti-Asian hate around COVID-19.
According to its Facebook page, the campaign also hopes to mobilize volunteers of all ethnicities to donate goods and services to people in need.

The video of Chow describing the attack was posted on becool2asians social media outlets alongside an explanation that she wants to channel her anger and fear about the incident into something positive.
Chow is currently casting a becool2asians video that will show real Asian Americans working on the front lines and has asked nurses, police officers, grocery store workers, delivery workers, and utility workers to email her if they would like to participate.
A statement on the campaign’s website describes anti-Asian sentiment as “rising exponentially with every passing day.”
“We’re ramping up quickly to respond to what we see as (an) emergency situation,” the statement says.
