At just 12 years, 4 months, and 25 days, Indian American Abhimanyu Mishra became the youngest ever chess grandmaster, beating Sergey Karjakin’s previous record of 12 years and 7 months.
Mishra has numerous world records already under his belt including: youngest United States Chess Federation Expert at age 7, youngest National Master at age 9, and the youngest International Master at age 10, according to CNN.
His most recent title of youngest grandmaster came after a frustrating year of COVID-related setbacks. The Guardian explains how Mishra was expected to beat Karjakin’s record by a wide margin, but was prevented from doing so due to cancelled tournaments. Since then, Mishra has been hard at work in Hungary to make up for lost time.
In order to be named a Grandmaster, Mishra had to achieve an Elo rating of at least 2500 and win three GM norm tournaments. Mishra’s last game before becoming a Grandmaster was against 12-year-old Grandmaster Leon Mendonca in Budapest.
Mishra is wasting no time by setting off on his next goal: to become a Super Grandmaster by age 14.
