The AAPI stars are slowly arriving ahead of the 95th Academy Awards ceremony.
RRR actor is living his dream
Ram Charan, one of the stars of RRR, appeared on the red carpet with his wife. RRR is an Indian film about two revolutionaries who fight back against British colonialism.
“This is the best journey I had as an actor. It can’t get better than this. I don’t know if I’m an actor or a fanboy moment having here on this carpet he said,” Charan told ABC Red Carpet reporters.
“Naatu Naatu,” a song from RRR, is nominated for Best Original song. It will be performed tonight at the Oscars. Charan is looking forward to seeing the performance. He thanked the music composers for creating the song and the Oscars for inviting the film to the ceremony.
“I think we’re not just coming as ourselves, we’re coming as India today. Thank you for the Academy for having us and having India,” he said.
Sandra Oh represents “Turning Red“
Sandra Oh is at the Oscars tonight to represent the Pixar film Turning Red. Oh voiced the mother of a teenage girl dealing with the challenges that come with puberty.
“I’m just so proud of this movie. I’m so pleased for Domee shi our director and Lindsey collins our producer for this great nomination. It’s kind of great to be here with like no stress and just ‘ra ra ra,’” Oh said during her red carpet interview with ABC.
Oh also teased one of her upcoming projects, saying during the interview that she had just wrapped filming for HBO’s adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen. She said the mini-series adaptation is finishing filming over the next few months in Thailand.
Hong Chau nominated for Best Supporting Actress for “The Whale”
Hong Chau was also in attendance, having been nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Whale.
“Everyone said it would be a great source of energy to have everyone here and it really is amazing,” Chau said in her red carpet interview with Vanessa Hudgens. “I grew up in New Orleans and I love a carnival. The fact that they shut down this city for this event is a big deal.”
The Whale is a film about a reclusive English teacher who hides away in his apartment, eating himself to death. Chau said she was drawn to the script because she had just become a mother.
“My daughter was 8 weeks old when we started this. I just empathized with the character. He’s trying to reconnect with his daughter. It’s just heartbreaking,” she told Hudgens.
Stephanie Hsu talks Everything Everywhere All at Once
Stephanie Hsu joined ABC on the red carpet to discuss Everything Everywhere All at Once, which is nominated for 11 Oscars. Hsu is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film.
“This film has meant so much to me when we made it. It has meant so much to the Asian community,” she said during her red carpet interview with Lily Singh. “It is about so many other things but we haven’t been here a lot of times. And so here we are today with this movie that is not only about this immigrant family but is about just love and kindness and being together.”
