Interesting Perspective on Asian Americans from Overseas

AsAmNews LogoIf you think its hard to get news about Asian Americans in the United States, news is even more scarce in Asia. The Jakarta Post recently published on interesting blog on Asian Americans from an Indonesian perspective. Rarely do they get news back in Indonesia on what Indonesians think as Americans. When Indonesian Americans are in the news, they are usually being interviewed for their thoughts on Indonesia.

The whole concept of being Asian means a lot different in Britain than it does in the United States. In Britain, the term Asian is largely used to refer to Southeast Asians or Indians. In the United States, the term is more broadly used but most Americans think of East Asians when they think of Asian Americans, according to the article in the Jakarta Post.

The writer concluded that Asian Americans are more closely aligned with whites in the United States than Blacks & Latino. He even described Asian Americans and whites in the US as being on one team and blacks & Latinos on the other.

Where do you think this perspective comes from? Has the model minority myth made its way overseas?
