First Lieutenant Receives Harshest Sentence in Hazing Death of Danny Chen

Arny CamaflougeThe highest ranking suspect in the hazing death of US Army Private Danny Chen will be discharged from the Army,  Reuters reported. He is the only one of 8 suspects to receive such a punishment.

Members of Chen’s platoon were accused of calling him racially derogatory names, throwing rocks at him and dragging him through the dirt. It is not yet know if First Lieutenant Daniel Schwartz will receive an honorable or dishonorable discharge.

The other seven suspects received less severe punishments including reduced ranks, forfeited pay, hard labor and short jail sentences.

“The most jail time received was six months,”  said Elizabeth OuYang, president of the New York chapter of the Organization of Chinese Americans. “This is a situation where you have someone who died. These slap-on-the-wrist punishments do not equate at all with the value of Danny Chen’s life.”
