The mother of Army Private & Chinese American Danny Chen couldn’t hold back tears as she expressed her frustration at the light sentences handed down to 8 army men who bullied their son who committed suicide.
“These sentences do not give justice to his life; we want the system to change so the punishment would fit the crime,” the tearful Su Zhen Chen said in Chinese.
The 8 men are accused of taunting Chen with racial epithets and forcing him to crawl on gravel as they threw rocks on him. The highest ranking officer of the 8 will be dismissed from the military, reported the Huffington Post. Five receive short prison sentences and two were demoted.
Legislation has been proposed that would crack down on military hazing.
What do you think? Did the punishments fit the crime?
