KPCC: That Pounding You Hear Is the Sound of Mochi

 

2013It’s a tradition that has withstood the test of time and automation. Japanese Americans are gathering in temples and households to make the traditional new year’s Mochi.

In the old days Japanese Americans would pound cook rice into dough. Now a days the process is all automated.  KPCC was on hand at the Higashi Honganji Buddhist Temple in Los Angeles to document how mochi is made.
