Mercury News: Last Remnant of Inland Empire Chinatown in Southern California Faces Demolition

Chinatown
Chinatowns around the country have been homes for Chinese immigrants and attractions for tourists. But the historic China House in Rancho Cucamonga faces the wrecking ball unless money can be raised to save it

A home that used to house Chinese laborers in the early 1900s is dilapidated and red tagged by the city of Rancho Cucamonga near Riverside, CA and faces demolition, reports the Mercury News.

It is considered the last remnant of Chinatown in the area and several Chinese American groups have rallied in an effort to rehabilitate the home and save it.

“We are aware that it’s really the last remaining structure in the Inland Empire that is evidence of the great presence of Chinese in the late 19th and early 20th century, so we’re really concerned this might be a significant loss,” said Eugene Moy of the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California.

An article in the Mercury News describes what it will take to save the structure and why time could be running out.
