Mercury News: Asian Americans Half of Silcon Valley Workforce, But Missing From Executive Ranks

Highrise building What accounts for the lack of Asian Americans occupying executive suites in Silicon Valley? Sure, there are notable exceptions here and there. But the numbers don’t lie. Asian Americans make up half of the workforce of Silicon Valley, but just 12 percent of the executive leaders and 8 percent of the board, wrote Buck Gee and Vish Mishra for the Mercury News.

Gee is the retired Vice President of Cisco Systems and Mishra is venture director of Clearstone Venture Partners.

71 percent of Asian Americans polled feel they are disadvantaged in workplace promotions.

“While these feelings persist among Asian-American professionals, we believe there is also a question around “chemistry” at the workplace, a chemistry that is rooted in their cultural upbringing,” the two wrote. What can be done? Gee & Mishra outline a few ideas in the Mercury News.
