Bloomberg: Chinatown Bus Crackdown Turns Into Bonanza for Other Bus Companies

busA crackdown on bus safety in Chinatown has opened the door for new carriers now doing a booming business, reports Bloomberg. The crackdown followed the fatal accident of a casino bus returning to New York’s Chinatown in 2011. 15 people were killed on the accident, triggering the largest ever bus safety enforcement sweep ever in May. As a result discount carriers like Megabus and Bolt Bus are filling the void–increasing departures 31%. “The only way this growth happens is when new demographics give it a try,” said Joseph Schwieterman, director of DePaul University’s Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development in Chicago. ” These aren’t just buses filled with college kids anymore.”
