NY Times: Korean Immigrants in North Dakota Serve Down Home American Food, Korean Style

CATEGORIES

restaurantGeewon Anderson immigrated from South Korea to Anchorage in 1991. In May she bought Charlie’s, a popular diner in Minot, North Dakota known for its good old fashion American food. Geewon’s family came from Korea to help her run the restaurant having never heard of sunny-side ups, ranch dressing or tomato sauce. But Anderson has done her best maintaining the original feel of the restaurant while making needed renovations.  “I cannot totally live with Koreans; it would drive me crazy,” she said. “I cannot totally live with American people; it drives me crazy. I love being in between and being a bridge.” It appears to be working. A profile in the NY Times shows her customers live her and the restaurant maintains its popularity. “She’s always upbeat,” said Gary Kramlich, 72, a real estate broker who has been eating breakfast at Charlie’s since 1963. Thanks to @Icanhasphilly and @SFdirewolf for bringing this slice of Americana to AsAmNews’ attention.
