Board of Equalization member Betty Yee is taking on Google and demanding the internet giant remove the controversial “Make Me Asian” app from its Google play store, reports the SF Weekly.
The app has been blasted by members of the Asian American community for using racist stereotypes to depict Asians and encouraging users to alter pictures of themselves with demeaning caricatures to make themselves look Asian.
“Google’s online platform encourages users to share pictures with friends and laugh heartily, advertising the idea that racist stereotypes should be promoted publicly,” Yee said.
Yee also demanded the removal of two similar apps by the same developer, Make Me Indian and Make Me Irish.
Google has resisted pressure to remove the apps saying they did not violate its hate speech policies.
