Boston Globe: 93-Year old Makes Journey to New Orleans for National Tour of Congressional Gold Medal

Japanese American SoldierSus Ito journeyed into the Vosges Mountains with the 442nd in France to rescue Texans from the 36th Division who had been surrounded by German troops.

Today the 93-year old made the trek to New Orleans from Boston for the opening ceremony of the 7 city tour of the Congressional Gold Medal honoring the 442n, 100th Battalion and Military Intelligence Unit. Lucky for me, San Francisco is one of the 7 cities the Medal will be exhibited. I won’t have to travel far.

But for Ito, this is something he didn’t want to miss.

“To this day, whenever I enter a dark forest, or a damp area, shady and cool, I get goose bumps all over,” said Ito. “Even thinking about it. It’s left an indelible mark on me.”
