Sus Ito journeyed into the Vosges Mountains with the 442nd in France to rescue Texans from the 36th Division who had been surrounded by German troops.
Today the 93-year old made the trek to New Orleans from Boston for the opening ceremony of the 7 city tour of the Congressional Gold Medal honoring the 442n, 100th Battalion and Military Intelligence Unit. Lucky for me, San Francisco is one of the 7 cities the Medal will be exhibited. I won’t have to travel far.
But for Ito, this is something he didn’t want to miss.
“To this day, whenever I enter a dark forest, or a damp area, shady and cool, I get goose bumps all over,” said Ito. “Even thinking about it. It’s left an indelible mark on me.”
