Hawaii Representative Colleen Hanabusa appeared on the Bill O’Reilly Show to condemn his remarks that Asian Americans were industrious and hard working and thus couldn’t possibly be liberal. Instead of letting the Representative talk, O’Reilly decided to go on a tirade about how Hanabusa couldn’t possibly have seen the entire report, but based her condemnation from a report from Media Matters.
O’Reilly accused Media Matters of taking his remarks out of context and accused Hawaii of creating an entitlement society. He denied making offensive remarks about Asian Americans.
When Hanabusa could talk, she tried to explain to O’Reilly that it was offensive for Asian Americans to hear him make sweeping generalizations about them rather than treating them as individuals. She said Hawaiians care about their elders and value each other. O’Reilly said he would agreed to stop making generalizations if the Representative would only condemn someone after seeing the entire report.
