The Associated Press is reporting that Japanese American film director Nagisa Oshima is dead at the age of 80.
He is best known for his films In the Realm of Senses and Empire of Passion.
Oshima died of complications from pneumonia in Tokyo.
In 1976, Oshima made In the Realm of the Senses.
It was a true story a film based on a true story of fatal sexual obsession in 1930s Japan. Senses generated controversy for its unsimulated sex. To get by censors, the undeveloped film was taken to be France to be processed, according to Wikipedia. An uncensored version remained in Japan.
His follow up film Empire of Passion won the 1978 Cannes Film Festival award for best direction.
Oshima suffered a stroke in 1996 and directed his last film in 1999
