Asian Journal: President Obama Urged to Appoint Asian American to US Supreme Court

US Supreme CourtA campaign is underway to urge President Obama to appoint an Asian American to the US Supreme Court, reports the Asian Journal in a blog by the National Asian American Coalition.

During President Obama’s final term in the White House, as many as four U.S. Supreme Court Justices could retire. Four of the nine currently sitting on the bench are between 74 and 79 years of age.  Today the Court includes an African American, Latina, Jewish Americans and Catholics, but no Asian Americans. Potential nominees include California’s State Supreme Court Justice, Filipina-American Tani Cantil-Sakauye and Justice Goodwin Liu of the California Supreme Court.

There are very few Asian Americans currently on the federal bench even though there are 42,000 Asian American lawyers across the country. the Coalition has also sent President Obama a letter asking that 10 percent of his nominees to the federal bench be Asian Americans.
