Asian Week is reporting the #MakeMeRacist hashtag is picking up support on twitter. The hashtag is part of a campaign by 18 Million Rising to pressure Google to remove the controversial Make Me Asian app from Google Play. That app along with the Make Me Indian app use stereotypical caricatures of the two ethnic groups to make people look Asian and Indian. Two separate petitions drives are underway demanding the apps be removed from sale. Google has refused saying the apps don’t violate its policies.
To up the pressure, 18 Million Rising is promoting the #MakeMeRacist hashtag. It’s asking Asian American celebrities to join in the effort by asking their fans to join the campaign. A check on twitter found numerous postings with the #MakeMeRacist hashtag.
18 Million Rising tweeted: The #makemeracist campaign is hopping oceans! Merci, http://ow.ly/gSp7u You can sign on here: http://bit.ly/makemeasian
