Parmasus Post: Asian Americans File Brief in US Supreme Court Protesting Arizona Voter Registration Law. @AALDEF

ballot The Asian American Legal Defense & Education Fund filed a U.S. Supreme Court brief opposing a Arizona law imposing voter registration requirements that it says hurts naturalized citizens, reports the Parmasus Post,

Proposition 200 requires that naturalized American citizens submit documented proof of citizenship in person. American born citizens can submit their birth certificates via mail. Almost 40 percent of Asian American citizens are foreign born and naturalized.

“All eligible citizens, either naturalized or native-born, should have equal access to the electoral process,” said Glenn D. Magpantay, Director of AALDEF’s Democracy Program. “The barriers that naturalized citizens encounter as a result of Proposition 200 run contrary to federal laws that were passed to eliminate such barriers to voting.”
