The year of the snake kicks off February 9th in Los Angeles Chinatown with a midnight ceremony at the Thien Hau Temple . Literally a half million firecrackers will be set off and Buddhist and Taoist monks will make offerings to their deities, Examiner.com reports.

The Golden Dragon Parade winds its way through the streets of Chinatown the following weekend and the Chinese New Year Festival is expected to attract 125,000 people. Attendees can be part of setting a new world record. Volunteers and festival attendees will attempt to fold  80,000 paper pieces  and link them together to form a huge record setting paper snake.

Year of the Snake on the Chinese zodiac calendar means change, filled with contemplation, preparation and much reflection.
