SF.Streetsblog.org: Parking Ban in SF Chinatown Returns

No ParkingAn experiment banning parked cars on busy Stockton Street in San Francisco’s Chinatown will return in time for the Lunar New Year. reports SF.Streetsblog.org.

The ban on parking will stretch five blocks and run from Jan 26 through February 8th. Barriers will be erected on the street where cars are normally parked. The spaces will be reserved for vendors and pedestrians.

“This is a great opportunity for the local businesses and their customers in the heart of Chinatown to enjoy the celebratory Chinese New Year season,” San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee said in a statement.

Car ownership in Chinatown is the lowest in the city, so supporters say the parking ban makes sense.

“Sidewalk shopping is a long Chinese tradition to welcome the New Year,” said Pius Lee, the chair of the Chinatown Neighborhood Association, in a statement. “This initiative is a win for the community.”
