It was a story some of us might have been able to tell. Leverett Wing was an intern in the Boston Statehouse. He was the only minority in the entire building besides Senator Bill Owen.
“There were only a handful of people of color, which showed in the attitudes of some people,” Wing said to Sampan. “During my first month at the Statehouse, it was casual Friday. I was in a dress shirt, casual slacks and shoes. Someone stuck her head out the door and said, ‘Can you make sure our floor gets vacuumed?’ Being young and abrasive, I said, ‘I’m not a bleepin’ cleaning person,’ and walked away.”
Today Wing is vice chair of the Governor’s Asian American Commission and associate director of the Division of Community Services for the Department of Housing and Community Development. Earlier this month, he was the first Chinese American ever invited to speak at the Martin Luther King luncheon in Boston.
“Whether you are Caucasian or African American, you are part of the great dream Dr. Martin Luther King had,” he told the crowd.
Rep Gloria Fox invited Wing to join the Black & Latino Caucus.
