NBC New York: NYPD Hate Crime Task Force Called After 8th Asian American Attacked in New York Elevator Beating & Robberies

New York Elevator attakcsAn 8th person in less than two weeks has been beaten and robbed in a New York elevator in a series of attacks on Asian Americans, reports NBC New York.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly has called on the Department’s Hate Crime Task Force as well as officers bilingual in Mandarin and Cantonese to work on the case. The latest victim suffered a broken nose and loss his wallet and cell phone.

In each reported case, the suspect has followed his victim into an elevator, beaten them and then made off with their valuables.  Police have released a surveillance video of the attacks and you can see it here.

“This kind of violence against our Asian American neighbors, and against any members of our community, will not be tolerated,” said Councilmember Melissa Mark-Viverito. “This attacker must be stopped, and we need the entire community to remain vigilant until he is apprehended.”
