Questions are being raised as to whether New York mayoral candidate John Liu is getting favorable coverage in Chinese language press. That question is as ridiculous as asking if the New York Times is being unfair to Liu. The Times has been in the lead investigating allegations of improper fundraising by Liu’s camp, and its coverage is credited with prompting a federal investigation.
As City & State points out, most of the general media has written off Liu’s mayoral candidacy because of the federal investigation. But Liu’s support in the Chinese and Asian American communities remains high, and the coverage of Liu’s candidacy in the Chinese language press is a reflection of that.
The World Journal did a four part series on Liu. The coverage has largely been described as mostly favorable. The paper points out it also did a similar series on Bill Thompson and John Catsimatidis.
“[Liu] absolutely gets more coverage,” said a World Journal source to City & State, “He sends out his schedule every day so we will take a look and see what event the Chinese and Asian community we cover might be interested in.”
