Boston College is resurrecting an Asian American literary magazine in digital form, reports the student publication, The Heights. ASIAM features poetry, essays, and visual art capturing the experiences of Asian American students.
The magazine originally launched in 1993 as True Colors, but discontinued in 2005. It resumed in 2010 as ASIAM and returns once again this year in digital form.
Their goal is to allow students to voice their experiences of this dual identity and establish a presence on Boston College campus. Nicholle Yu, CSOM ’16 said.
“I think [ASIAM] is absolutely necessary because I don’t think Asian Americans express their thoughts through things like poetry enough,” Jae Won Shin ’15 said. “Sometimes, we want to be discreet in talking about our thoughts and feelings … and by making a structured environment for the Asian community, and those who want to contribute who are not Asian, we can communicate more.”
