Lion DanceConfetti canyons fired and 500,000 firecrackers exploded to welcome the Year of the Snake in New York City. More than 50,000 people crowded into Sara D. Roosevelt Park for the festivities, reported NY1.

“I love seeing all the colors raining down from the sky and of course the noise and the crowds. It’s just a lot of fun, it’s why we came to New York,” said an onlooker.

Adding to the difficulty this year is heavy snowfall that fell on New York Friday. Park employees spent the entire weekend to clear the park of snow.

“This is the year that is suppose to signify wisdom, experience and resolve,” said City Comptroller John Liu, the first Asian-American in citywide office.
