Examiner.com: Jose Antonio Vargas’ Makes Emotional Plea to U.S. Senate Panel

Time Magazine cover of Jose Antonio VargasA undocumented Filipino  journalist who has become a symbol of dreamers in America testified at a U.S. Senate panel hearing on immigration reform and asked “What do you want to do with me.”

Jose Antonio Vargas who came out as an undocumented immigrants just a few years after winning a pulitzer prize with the Washington Post urged the panel to create “a path to citizenship.”

“Ultimately, it took me 12 years to come out as an undocumented American–because that is what I am, an American,” Vargas told the panel.  “But I am grateful to have been able to tell the truth. And in the past few years, more undocumented people, particularly young dreamers, are coming out. Telling the truth about the America we experience. We dream of a path to citizenship so we can actively participate in our American democracy.”

He concluded with a few questions.

“What do you want to do with me? What do you want to do with us? How do you define ‘American’?”
