California Forward: Asian American Voters on the Upswing

ballotA report from the Asian American Justice Center, Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote, and the National Asian American Survey show enthusiasm for voting among Asian Americans in California is on the upswing.

Asian Americans represent the fasting growing racial group in the state. Language assistance may be key to energizing California’s 4 million Asian American to register and vote. As many as 40 percent of those may need language assistance, according to an estimate reported by California Forward

” The good thing is there are some laws in the books that provide that language assistance,” said Eugene Lee, Director of the Voting Rights Project of the Asian Pacific American Legal Center in Los Angeles.  “The federal voting rights act provides that assistance. Some counties provide language assistance very well and what we would love to see for some best practices to be established and to be shared across counties. That’s happened to some extent already over the past decade. We’d like to see that happen more. ”
