A 90-year-old Japanese American who’s service with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team had been forgotten due to a mix up decades ago is finally being recognized, reports Clarksville Online.
George Nishimura volunteered to serve with the highly decorated unit along with one of his brothers. He received a promotion and somehow his serial number was changed and his record of service in the 442nd was loss.
When his unit along with members of the 100th Infantry Batallion and Military Intelligence Service received their Congressional Gold Medals in 2010, Nishimura was not on the list. His family worked diligently to correct that oversight and this week Nishimura will be awarded his medal just three days before his 90th birthday.
