CBS Sacramento: Congress Honors Vietnamese American Activist & Freed Political Prisoner

Vietnam SchoolA Vietnamese American activist released from a Vietnamese jail after 9 months  is being honored as an American hero, reports CBS Sacramento

Nguyen Quoc Quan received a congressional award Monday for his courage. He was arrested as a terrorist by the Vietnamese government when he landed there in April to teach non-violent protest.

He would spend the next9 months in a cold dark cell until he was finally released a week ago following congressional pressure. He described his experience as terrible, but counts himself as lucky.

“I miss my family, I miss my friends. So I think a lot of people lose their family. I just miss,” he said about being able to come home eventually.

He longs for the day peaceful protest will be allowed in his former home country.  For now, he’s just glad to be back in the United States.

“I’m so happy, I think I’m on top of the world, so happy. Cannot imagine that he’d come back.”
