IANS: Indian American Leads Effort to Get Last State to Officially Abolish Slavery

LincolnIf you saw the academy award nominated Steven Spielberg movie, Lincoln, you know the votes to end slavery did not come easily. Now 147 years after the United States officially abolished slavery, the last state of the union is now officially on board thanks to a sharp eyed Indian American professor, reports IANS.

It took two-thirds of the states to pass the 13th amendment to end the forced migration of Africans for a lifetime of in servitude. Since 1865 those states that failed to pass the amendment have one by one reversed their action. It was widely thought that Mississippi finally did that in 1995

But Dr. Ranjan Batra, associate professor of neurobiology and anatomical sciences at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, noticed in the record that there was an asterisk next to the state of Mississippi. .

No one noticed that until Dr Batra discovered it.

A note read: “Mississippi ratified the amendment in 1995, but because the state never officially notified the US Archivist, the ratification is not official.”

You can find out what Batra had to do to change that in this report from IANS.
