A simple gesture by former Today host Ann Curry to remember the victims of the massive school shooting in Newtown, CT has snowballed into a successful community fundraising drive.

The Saginaw Community Foundation, a local community organization in Michigan, recently launched a donation challenge after hearing about Ann Curry’s 26 Acts of Kindness, which was initiated by Curry in honor of the 26 victims killed in the Sandy Hook shooting.

Mark Flegenheimer, former foundation board chairman and president of Michigan Sugar Co., urged the foundation’s 32 board members to each donate $100. This challenge, however, received an unexpected amount of money.

“The original thought was to have 26 people to donate and raise $2,600, but that snowballed, and we ended up raising $7,121.78,” Brian B. Jackson, vice president of donor relations and development, told MLive.

According to Jackson, the money will be divided among a few organizations in Saginaw, including Operation Reach, Mid-Michigan Children’s Museum, and YMCA of Saginaw.
