LA Times: LA’s Mayors Race Inspires Big Vote Drive in Koreatown

voteA big get out the vote drive is on in LA’s Koreatown to duplicate the great voter turnout from the November election for Tuesday’s mayor’s race.  The 70 percent voter turnout for the presidential race closed the traditionally large gap between turnouts county wide versus Koreatown.

Although 70 percent is highly unlikely for a local election, its not stopping the community from trying.

Volunteers with the Korean Resource Center have phoned thousands of voters encouraging residents to cast their vote on Tuesday, reports the LA Times,  It’s not an easy job.

“Some young men, the first words they speak are, ‘I don’t have time.’ I ask them, ‘Can you take three minutes and make the time?’ Some people just have nasty talk and say, ‘Why do you keep bothering me?’ ” said volunteer Grace Yee.

According to the LA Times, traditionally turnout in Koreatown has lagged 18 percent behind county wide voting totals. But in November it was just 2 percent.

You can read a lot more about the determination of volunteers to better those totals from November in the LA Times.
