OxfordTownie: Miami Student Shuts Down Twitter Account Used for Racist Tweets Against Asians

Oxford AsiansA  Miami University student accused of sending out racist tweets has closed his twitter account Oxford Asians after he was confronted by students and faculty members, reported  OxfordTownie.

Sam Kornau, a senior majoring in strategic communications from Miami University and a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity, admitted responsibility for the  tweets  , but defended the OxfordAsians account as a “parody site  It was not meant to be malicious or racist in any way.” he said.

He had been writing tweets that tapped into stereotypes of Asian students for at least half a year. He had nearly 1,000 followers. Some of his tweets made fun of Asian student’s accents and their obsession with good grades.  “Gave blood today. They told me my blood was B-. Why not it A+????” he wrote in one of his tweets.  “My favorite music? Wok and woll.” went another tweet.

Nicolyn Woodcock, a graduate student majoring in English, took action and reported the incident to the Office of Equity and Equal Opportunity when she learned of the tweets. “I decided that I’m not going to keep quiet about this,” she said. “This speech needed to be challenged. Someone had to say it’s not O.K.”

The number of international students at Miami University, especially Asian and Chinese students, has increased 480 percent in the past five years, according to OxfordTownie.

Ron Becker, associate professor of communications, said, “I think there are many who do work hard to get beyond their own corner of the world. Of course, figuring out how widespread this issue is across campus is never easy. I think this should be viewed as a red flag that compels the administration, faculty, and students to redouble their efforts at promoting a culture of inclusion at Miami by all means necessary.”
