posted by Randall

Japanese American BaseballThe Oakland Athletics on Thursday will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the opening of Zenimura Field, where Japanese Americans incarcerated at Gila River near Phoenix played baseball, reported MLB.com.

Among those throwing out the first pitch are three survivors of that camp including Kenichi Zenimura, the  man widely considered to be the “Father of Japanese American Baseball.” Zenimura was the subject of a biography by Bill Staples Jr.

A ceremony will take place prior to Thursday exhibition game against the Seattle Mariners at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. Also taking part will be The Nisei Baseball Research Project
