Yuma Sun: Newspaper Shuts Down Comments After Hate Speech Against Muslim Americans

Yuma Sun logoA report in the Yuma Sun on the upcoming opening of a mosque prompted comments filled with hateful speech and forced the newspaper to disable comments for that story.

The newspaper wrote: “We are firm supporters of free speech and in general do not moderate the comments on YumaSun.com. However, the attacks on our local Muslim American population were uncalled for, and the complaints we received about the comments were justified.

“Islamophobic rants by YumaSun.com commenters serve only to hurt a population in Yuma which has done nothing to deserve that treatment.”

You can read more about the thinking behind the newspaper’s decision in the Yuma Sun.
