An Indian American marine who says she faced sexual abuse while in the military for 5 years has called on congress to open up civilian courts to military personnel, reports Rediff.
Anu Bhagwati spoke at a hearing on sexual abuse in the military. She says she witnessed reports of rape, sexual assault and harassment “swept under the rug by a handful of field grade officers.”
“Many of the women who were impacted by these incidents, including me, are no longer in the military.” Bhadwati said. “However, all of the officers who were complicit in covering up these incidents have since retired or are still serving on active duty,” she told lawmakers.
Bhagwati,is now the executive director and co-founder of the Service Women’s Action Network.
