Indian Express: New Bill Would Limit Hiring of H1B Visa Holders

Senator Chuck GrassleyA new bill introduced in the U.S. Senate would cap the percentage of workers a company could hire through the H1B Visa program to 50 percent, reports the Indian Express.

Supporters of the bill by Senator Chuck Grassley said it would protect the jobs of American workers while ensuring that companies have the ability to hire the talent they need.

But opponents fear it will make it harder for Indian Americans and other workers from overseas to get hired despite having skills often lacking in the American work force.

“Somewhere along the line, the H-1B program got side-tracked, said Grassley.  “The program was never meant to replace qualified American workers, but it was instead intended as a means to fill gaps in highly specialized areas of employment.”
