A chef tasting event sponsored by the Joslin’s Asian American Diabetes Initiative is more about just good food.
“Regardless of whether you are East Asian or South, we see a greater risk of diabetes at a lower body mass index,” says Karen Lau, MS, RD, who heads the Asian American Diabetes Initiative (AADI) at the Joslin Diabetes Center. “The usual BMI for diabetes risk is around 25 percent, but we see it at 23 percent for Asians. That small percentage is a greatly increased risk and it’s more likely to go undetected.”
She gave Metro five top diabetic-friendly diet tips:
–Brown carbs are better than white carbs
–Dietary fat needs to be controlled
–The salt has to go
–Portion Control, too much of a good thing is bad
–Watch the sugar
