Times of India: Cap Could Double on H1B Visas

High TechAn immigration reform plan being discussed in the senate could double the number of workers allowed in this country under H-1B visas, reports the Times of India.

The article cites sources quoted by the Washington Post who say the number of highly skilled workers allowed in this country would dramatically increase and students who obtain graduate degrees in science, engineering, technology or math would be allowed to stay in the US permanently.

Legislation, however, proposed by Senator Chick Grassley would ban companies from hiring foreign workers under the visa program if more than 50 percent of its workforce are H-1B or L visa holders.

Opponents of Grassley’s plan fear his plan would actually make it harder for foreign workers to enter the country.

More reaction to the Senate plan in the Times of India.
