About 200 protestors marched outside the Wharton India Economic Forum this weekend outraged over the conference’s decision to withdrawal an invitation to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi to speak, reported the Economic Times.
Modi remains a controversial figure in India politics and has been tied to the 2002 Gujarat riots that left 58 Hindu pilgrims dead. He is currently banned from entering the United States, but Modi is also predicted by some to be India’s next prime minister.
The protestors who came from New York and New Jersey accused conference organizer of violating the freedom of speech and of caving in to three Indian American professors from the University of Pennsylvania who petitioned to get Modi’s speech cancelled.
The protestors said they were “saddened and outraged to see this great university being bullied by a mere three English and Social Work activist professors” of Indian origin.”
