Los Angeles Times: Ethnic Studies Trending Thanks to Arizona- HT @Nichibei

Scales of justiceInterest in ethnic studies nationwide has picked up since a Federal court ruled that the city of Tucson can ban the subject from its schools, reports the Los Angeles Times

The city of Tucson successfully argued that the Mexican American Studies program ignited resentment against non-Latinos. But since then, underground libraries featuring Chicano literature has popped up in such places as Milwaukee and Louisville.

“I guess the irony is … that we have banded together and created a new civil rights movement, a renaissance in Latino literature. Now there are people in Louisville, Ky., who will be enjoying Chicano literature,” said Tony Diaz, who heads a group dedicated to buying books to keep Mexican American Studies programs alive.

The federal ruling will be appealed to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

You can read more about the underground movement and the court decision in the Los Angeles Times.
