Los Angeles Mystery: 8-Year Old Writing Extraordinaire

Magnifying GlassThe other day a Facebook friend marveled at the discovery that his third grade son was reading at 12th grade level. The keys, the proud parent proclaimed, are lots of reading, good diet and no television.

This morning in  the blog  Los Angeles Mystery, there was yet another precocious 8-year old I was reading about.

Allison Zheng, age 8, won honorable mention in the Asian Pacific Fund contest.

She wrote “My Goal As An Asian American Detective.” Yes, she wants to be a detective when she grows up. She writes about choosing an alternative career path from the one favored by lots of Asian parents– doctoring, lawyering or accounting.

First, how does an eight-year old already know about a career path, let alone an alternate one?

And how do you dissect your reasoning for wanting to be one, other than maybe you saw something on television you want to emulate.

No, Allison breaks it down in a way perhaps only a child can, but with the depth of a grown up.
