Seattle Times: World Premier Set for @DavidHenryHwang Play About Bruce Lee

CATEGORIES

Bruce LeeThe World Premier of David Henry Hwang’s musical and dance production about the life of Bruce Lee has been scheduled for February 2014, reports the Seattle Times. “Kung Fu” will get its debut at the  Signature Theater in Seattle where Lee opened his first martial arts school.

The play is described as a story about a martial artist from Hong Kong who comes to America to become the greatest movie star in the world.  Lee himself was born in San Francisco, but moved to Hong Kong when he was just three months old.  According to a November 2012 article in  the New York Times,  the Tony winning playwright shared his thoughts on the martial arts legend.

“Bruce Lee created this new paradigm that an Asian man can be strong, respected, said Hwang.  “He wanted to be a hero, this Asian kid from Hong Kong who had an accent, whose English was poor, who wore glasses, the opposite of what we imagine a hero to be. How he gets there is a humanizing story, someone who could easily have failed, who did fail at certain things.”
