Asian Week: Chinese American Standout Had NBA Tryout in 1964 (video)

Norman OwyoungNorman Owyoung was one of the last players cut by the then San Francisco Warriors in 1964. Rick Quan reports for Asian Week and his website AsianAmericanSports.com , the Warriors were so impressed, team owner Franklin Mieuli wrote him a letter, “someday a Chinese player will make it because Norman Owyoung broke the ice with the San Francisco Warriors in 1964.”

Owyoung starred for the San Francisco Saints, a team of Chinese American basketball players.

Quan caught up with Owyoung to get his thoughts nearly 50 years later.

“Whenever we go to the tournament,” Owyoung said speaking about his high school team, George Washington High in San Francisco, we always the underdogs because I’m so short.  But in my time we won most of our tournaments so we did good. It doesn’t bother me when I play with big people. I’m a little quicker and they’re a little bit slower and so that evens it out. ”
