University of California at San Francisco students spent the first day of their spring break teaching Chinatown single room occupancy residents earthquake survival skills with duct tape and garbage bags, reported Synapse.
The pharmacy students taught how to use duct tape to make bandages, drinking cups and rope in an emergency. They also demonstrated how a simple garbage bag could be turned into a rain coat.
Single room occupancy residents live in cramped quarters, often 8 x 10 rooms for an entire family. They share communal bathrooms and kitchens and often fare the worst in a disaster.
