Asian American groups are lobbying California Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) to be their advocate in immigration reform, reports ABS CBN.

The needs of Asian Americans have taken a back seat to Hispanics in the immigration reform debate as many see immigration reform as an Hispanic issue.’

“We’re asking Senator Feinstein to be our champion, to be with our families and to protect our family visa system. California is the largest state in the country that will be affected by immigration reform. We have the largest amount of families, mixed-status families, undocumented families,” said Ray Barrera of CHIRLA.

“Asians are now the largest group of new immigrants coming into this country. We face some of the longest waiting periods for legal immigration, up to 24 years for some trying to move here from the Philippines and even though Asians make up 6% of the US population, we make up over 40% of family immigration backlogs,” explained democratic Congresswoman Judy Chu, chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus.
