Automatic spending cuts triggered by the sequester could hit Asian American seniors harder than any other group, according to a blog by Christine Takada in New American Media.
The percentage of Asian American senior citizens is expected to rocket 350 percent by 2060, says the president of the National Asian Pacific Center on Aging. As many as 89 percent in some Asian subgroups have limited English proficiency. 10,000 are served through a national and toll free Asian Language hotline. That helpline which helps seniors navigate badly needed Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid payments could lose up to a third of its staff hours due to the sequester.
One hundred low income seniors will lose their minimum wage training positions as well.
