The Hindu: Preps Underway for Smithsonian Exhibition on Indian Americans

Smithsonian Asian Pacific American CenterThe Smithsonian’s Asian Pacific American Center came to New York recently to preview its new exhibition on the Indian American experience in America, reports  The Hindu.

“Beyond Bollywood: Indian Americans Shape the Nation” is set to open this December and is expected to attract 7 million visitors during its one year run in Washington, D.C.  before going on national tour. The Indian American Heritage Project is the largest project ever undertaken in the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center’s 15 year history.

“India, the people of India, Indian Americans, and Indian-American history, art and culture are no longer objects to be sold, bought, owned, or disenfranchised the way Asian-Pacific American life was during the colonial era and the early part of American history; rather, we are now active and proud participants in the American story, and, indeed, in the history of the world.” said Konrad Ng, Director of the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center.

Ng spoke at a reception held at the Consulate of India in New York along with Dr. Masum Momaya, Curator of the Indian-American Project.

“I have a two-pronged purpose: dismantling stereotypes and highlighting the contributions of Indians Americans to shaping this country — politically, professionally and culturally.” said Momaya.
